What’s on in the East Midlands; our top picks for Spring

We’ve managed to get through the January blues. Now it’s time to come out of hibernation and see what’s on in the East Midlands.

The area is a hive of activity in Spring. You don’t even have to leave Market Harborough to find things to do. This is great for both glamping guests and visitors to the area. You’ll never be short of activities and adventures. In this blog, we’ve made a list of our top picks nearby. We’ve gone for a few outdoors, a few indoors and a fun alternative evening event.

As you know, we are big fans of the outdoors. You won’t be surprised that our first top picks include exploring the countryside. Spring is a great time to venture out and get some fresh air. Exploring also has no location boundary, you can do it wherever you are. However, we love the Leicestershire and Northamptonshire countryside for this. But, of course, we are biased.

Go outdoors

The Woodland Trust has wonderful resources for children and families. Theirwebsite includes downloads of nature hunts, craft activities, and games. Their tagline is “Explore. Imagine. Play. Discover.”; I can’t think of anything better. Check out their website and resources here.

For us adults, why not get outdoors by taking part in a race? The East Midlands provides a great terrain for running or cycling with the rolling hills and country roads. Race Harborough organises a multitude of races and events every year. Each with varying levels so that everyone can get involved. The next race is the Battlefield Duathlon on 18th March. Give it a go!

For something less active, you can find an abundance of Spring fairs, and evening events in the area. Here are a few nearest to us.

Spring Fair

What’s on in the East Midlands; our top picks for SpringDown the road from us at Country Bumpkin Yurts is Kelmarsh Hall. On 4th March Kelmarsh Hall is running a Spring Fair from 11am-4pm. The Spring Fair will host lots of beautiful craft, gift and food stalls, as well as the annual, family-friendly Spring Walk through the Kelmarsh Gardens. You’ll also get a first-first view ‘below stairs’ experience and an exciting sneak preview of the Heritage Lottery funded project Tunelling through the Past, where you can experience the lives of those who lived and worked at Kelmarsh! (Admission: Adults entry is £3.50 or free with a valid lottery ticket. Child entry is £2.00)

Vintage & Handmade Fair

On February 24th the Northampton Vintage Fair will be hosting the Market Harborough Vintage & Handmade Fair at the Three Swans Hotel. It will begin at 11 am and goes until 4. The fair is an established and popular fair which brings together traders from across the East Midlands and beyond. The emphasis is on original homewares and unique vintage inspired handmade. There will be clothes, costume jewellery, records, accessories, a few antiques and small pieces of furniture and as well as lots of ‘bits and bobs’. (Cost: £2 before 12, £1 after 12, Children are admitted free of charge and Dogs are welcome too!) For more information call 07827 228747. This should be good fun for us vintage fans!

Bourbon & Blues at The Oat Hill

As an evening activity, on Friday 23rd February the Oat Hill will be hosting Bourbon & Blues. You will have the chance to explore several bourbons from around the world that have been specially picked for this event. And they will be playing the southern style music of New Orleans all evening for your enjoyment. We love activities that are a little different; this sounds right up our street. Call 01858 462324 to reserve your space and avoid disappointment. Table service will be provided all evening.

What’s on

We have hardly scratched the surface of what is on in the East Midlands. But we hope you liked our top picks of some of the events nearby. We’ve gone for something active, a few things less so, and a wonderful evening activity. They also give a wonderful insight into country town life – which might be a breath of fresh air for city dwellers. For even more events check out The Go Leicestershire Website to see what is around. All events are also close enough to be incorporated into a glamping stay at Country Bumpkin Yurts. The weather is starting to warm up now so fair weather campers can start booking again ;-P
